Canoe Kentucky's outstanding instructional staff is ready to get you off on the right foot in this wonderful sport. All of our instructors are American Canoe Association certified, and many have received other accredidations as well. Class size is small and interactive, with class sizes being 4 students to one instructor; the perfect number for plenty of individual attention.

 Paddling Courses

Kayak Fundamentals 1

No Pre Requisites

This fun, interactive class takes students all the way through the basics of recreational kayaking. Taught in a flat water situation, every effort is given to make students as comfortable as possible in a boat. Skills taught include proper boat, pfd and paddle selection, entry/exiting the boat, basic strokes, wet exits, and much more.

Kayak Fundamentals 2

Pre Requisite – Kayak Fundamentals I or Paddling Experience

4 Hours


This high energy course gets paddlers better acquainted with moving water situations. This course takes a 6 mile trip down the river/creek, where students perfect earlier taught techniques. Practice is also given in catching eddies, peeling out and ferrying

Whitewater Kayaking

Prerequisite – Kayak Fundamentals II or Whitewater Experience

Great for anyone wanting to get involved in this adrenaline pumping sport. Students learn to conquer their fears and master their skills on class II-III whitewater. Proper stroke techniques are a must, along with Eskimo rolling, eddying, ferrying, surfing, and much more. Good for beginners up to intermediate paddlers.

 

Bracing and Rolling Skills Courses

This class is great for anyone wanting to learn Eskimo rolling and beyond. Students will learn all about body dynamics in a boat, as well as hip snaps and paddle motions. The most basic part of rolling is to never flip over, so this class teaches how to stay upright using a paddle and your hips. Three different braces are taught.

Kayak/ Canoe Rolling 1

Prerequisite – Rolling and Bracing Course or Rolling Practice

Anyone wanting to spend any time in a whitewater or touring kayak should master this skill. Instructors teach a basic C to C or sweep roll. Students also learn how to do perfect wet exits and bow (Eskimo) rescues. Also good for tuning up a weak roll.

Kayak/ Canoe Rolling 2

Prerequisite – Kayak Rolling I or an Already Good Roll

Includes Boat, Skirt, Paddle and PFD
1 Hour

A good roll is adequate, but a bombproof one is better. Learn your offside C to C or sweep, or you may choose to learn a more advanced roll like a back deck, hand, or Greenland roll. Your choice in this fun course where you and your instructor will be working out of boats.


 

Insructor Level Courses

 ACA River Canoe Instructor Course: Level 1, 2, or 3

This class is designed for folks who are wanting to teach canoe. That may be in a school or camp setting, or looking to get a job out an outfitter. This is an instructor level class, so some paddling experience is required. You are not in this class to learn about how to paddle, you are in this class to teach how to paddle. You will be expected to teach multiple parts of the curriculum to the best of your ability. This is a certification class, so proper skills are a must by the end of the class.
